Easter 2017 in Rome

Pope Francis for Easter liturgical celebrations: Holy Week 2017 in Rome

Today is Ash Wednesday that officially opens the Lent, the period preceding #Easter that in the Christian Church is devoted to abstinence and penitence and that ends in the Holy Week. The many liturgical celebrations, that will attract thousands of faithfuls in Rome, will be presided by Pope Francis.

Holy Week celebrations at St. Peter’s Basilica

On Palm Sunday, the 9th of April, the palms will be blessed in St. Peter’s Square before the Mass and the Angelus.

Holy Thursday: the Chrism Mass will be celebrated in the St. Peter’s basilica, with the participation of high religious offices. At 9.30 am, the Holy Father will preside the function. The Pope will continue throughout the day with the ritual washing of the feet: last year he washed the feet to some refugees of the center CARA of Castelnuovo di Porto, near Rome, with a Muslim majority: a strong symbolic gesture of invitation to hospitality and brotherhood.

During Good Friday at 17.00 the Lord’s Passion will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica: Pope Francis will preside at the Liturgy, then continuing in the evening with the Via Crucis at the Colosseum, with the final apostolic blessing to the faithfuls.

On the evening of Holy Saturday, there will be the Easter Vigil with the Pope, starting at 20.30 in St. Peter’s Basilica, with the blessing of fire in the atrium.

The following day will be the Holy Easter, Sunday the 16th of April 2017, with Mass scheduled at 10.15 am at the Saint Peter’s Basilica and the blessing ‘Urbi et Orbi’ made by the Holy Father at noon in St. Peter’s Square.

Easter Monday 2017

The Easter Sunday ends the Holy Week 2017, although the next day, the #Easter Monday, at noon the rites will continue with the Regina Coeli prayer that will took place of the Angelus until Pentecost.
