The 2020 Carnival officially begins on Sunday 9 February and continues until February 25.
In detail, Fat Thursday falls on February 20, Mardi Gras on February 25, and on February 26 it will be Ash Wednesday, which begins the Lenten season. So the Sunday of this year’s Carnival will be February 23, and it is on this date that most of the Roman events dedicated to this holiday are concentrated.
It begins with the Tarantella del Carnevale at the Auditorium Parco della Musica: a special occasion to rediscover the ancient agricultural rituals that in the old classical civilizations celebrated the passage from Winter to Spring, a time of awakening and blossoming, a hope for an abundant harvest.
But the majority of the events is concentrated in the Roman hinterland, starting with the historical celebration that moves ahead of the others: the Tivoli Carnival. It opens the curtain on Sunday 2 February to continue, almost for a whole month, until February 25.
We’ll also mention the characteristic Carnival of Ronciglione that returns with the three great Gala Courses of 2020 and many interesting events. From February 9 to 25, Ronciglione is transformed into the city of fun amid parades, Gala courses, masks, gastronomy, veglioni and gastronomic events.
Just a stone’s throw from Rome, a Carnival not to be missed is that of Frascati where, this year, celebrations will begin on February 16 and continue until the 25. The town of the Castelli Romani will once again be colored with masks, parades, events and folklore, and the absolute protagonist will be Pulcinella.
For children and adults the Fantamagic Carnival arrives in Monte Porzio Catone. It starts on Saturday 15 February with the preview of the Carnival “Children in celebration”, to continue on February 16, 22, 23 and 24 with parades, workshops, activities for adults and children. To close the Carnival on Shrove Tuesday there will be a final parade and fireworks.
We close our roundup with the Carnival at the Bracciano Castle, which is preparing to put forward initiatives made especially for children. Sunday 9 and 23 February, at 3 pm, the Carnival will be staged with the show “The King’s clothes”. The two-day celebrations include an animated visit for children, and the final story “The King’s clothes”, which will come to life in the magical story room. A fun initiative dedicated to the carnival, in which children will be active protagonists of the fairytale in a fairytale place.
